Join us at the statehouse on Thursday, January 23, in room 156-B at 8:30 AM.
TLDR;
House Bill 1393 requires law enforcement to report anyone suspected of being unlawfully present in the U.S. to ICE.
Why This is Harmful:
Encourages racial profiling.
Erodes trust between communities and law enforcement.
Risks family separation and creates fear in immigrant communities.

Tomorrow, Thursday, January 23, the Indiana Latino Democratic Caucus (INLDC) will stand in opposition to House Bill 1393, the "Immigration Notice" bill, during a hearing at the Indiana State House. This bill would require law enforcement officers to provide names, addresses, and other identifying information to ICE after arresting or issuing a summons to individuals suspected of being unlawfully present in the United States. The hearing will take place in Room 156-B at 8:30 AM.
Why is this harmful?
The key word here is "suspected." This vague language gives law enforcement the power to make life-altering decisions based on assumptions, potentially leading to:
Racial Profiling: Individuals may be unfairly targeted based on their appearance, language, or perceived ethnicity rather than concrete evidence.
Erosion of Trust: Community members, especially immigrants, may become fearful of engaging with law enforcement, even as victims or witnesses to crimes, which undermines public safety. It perpetuates fear within immigrant communities, discouraging individuals from participating fully in civic life.
Family Separation: The bill increases the risk of families being torn apart, with parents or guardians detained and children left behind.
This bill is not just about immigrationโitโs about human rights, dignity, and ensuring that every person in Indiana feels safe in their community.
What can you do?
